The micro medical electric spine drill is not an everyday power drill but a piece of equipment that is designed specifically to be used during spinal surgery with safety and the ability to control the surgical procedure. The general surgical drill system is typically of heavier weight and larger size, but modern micro electric drilling systems for spinal surgery are designed to be lightweight, small and able to operate in the restricted and sensitive areas around the spinal cord and nerve roots.
Most systems have variable-speed controls, adjustable torque settings, and safety guards to stop the drill from going too far to help protect important structures.
They are most often used in spine surgery like spinal fusion or for decompression surgery and screw placement. The surgeon needs to be able to create a precise channel through the bone without disrupting the surrounding tissue.
What makes them “neuro spine-specific” is because of their atraumatic use in the surgical operation. Drill tips designed to generate a minimum of heat as well as reduce splintering of bone. Majority of these models have built-in feedback systems that help alert the surgeon when they approach a critical area. The combination of power and accuracy of these drills has made them become the doctor’s staple equipment in spine surgery today, contributing to shortening the duration of the surgery and providing better protection to the patient’s wellbeing.
Topic 2: Name of Spine Screw Surgery and Function of Micro Drills in Fixing Spinal Fractures
Spinal screw surgery is also called spinal instrumentation and pedicle screw fixation, and this surgery is essential in stabilising an injured, degenerated, or deformed spine. The micro electric spine drill is a fundamental device that enables this type of surgery.
The process starts with the surgeon using a drill to cut through the bone of the vertebral “arm” (known as the pedicle) to make a tiny hole through which they can put the screws in. The precision of this operation is critical: the holes must be perfectly in line because if the screw goes through the spinal canal or through a nerve root it can cause serious injury, and since the micro drill is small and very precise it’s the best tool for this function.
The screws serve as attachments to keep the rods and plates together as bone grafts heal the vertebrae. The immobilization of the vertebrae diminishes discomfort, straightens deformities and prevents further degeneration of the vertebrae. In most patients’ cases, use of a micro drill promotes shorter Incisions, less bone damage, and earlier healing when compared to the earlier, rougher methods of drilling.
